With the aim to boost economy amid the lockdown due to emergence of COVID-19, several state governments have decided to suspend most of the labour laws in their respective state via ordinance. This has been done with an aim to give curb the effects of lockdown on Indian economy and provide employers with more flexibility to run their factories. This might give a much needed boost to the economy and benefit the employers but these have raised few concerns regarding the safety and Security.
The proportion of employees working at home or utilizing flexible working arrangements has been increasing along with the advancements in information and communications technology (ICT). Companies are taking a relook at employee benefits and employer liabilities as a majority of their staff work from home amid the lockdown.
Labour laws have been enacted in the country to maintain a balance between the rights and obligations of working employees and their employers. But due to the recent outbreak of Covid-19, there has been a significant change in the status of labour laws and labours. Thus this paper aims to throw light on current status of labour laws amid the outbreak and its impact on the position of labours in India.
